The only problem with Rip was that he was very scared of dark. Rip was so scared of dark that he couldn’t fall asleep at night without a light on. He didn’t dare to walk alone on streets at night. Needless to say, he didn’t like to enter any dark places like barns or basements. Despite of this,he helped the villagers as much as he could.
World War II broke out. He was sent to France to fight. He survived, but he went blind.
He despaired that he was going to live with his most scared thing forever. He could not help the villagers as before.
To his surprise, everyone in the village came to comfort him. They helped him with everything in his daily life. Something was changing. He could sense that behind the darkness, there was warmth and a joy of purely helping others.
He gradually reached a compromise with the darkness. He was happy to have it accompanied. He was also happy to have the villagers accompanied.
