China’s social-media platforms have imposed a blanket ban on eating broadcasts in a fight against food wastage. Yet, tempting as it is to conclude that these eating influencers—seen to feast on a copious amount of food—should be punished for wasting food, the reality is more complicated. (46) Amid the diverse eating shows, some feature mukbangers, as walking yelps, exploring and broadcasting local delicacies, which are conducive to local tourism; others, in which eaters munch and crunch their way through the enormous platters, prove to be an antidote to eating disorder and loneliness. And oftentimes the uneaten food in the video will be consumed by staffers afterwards, resulting in no wastage.
